Do You Feel Safe? by Chicago’s Motherless is a compact, no-nonsense blast of punk infused sludge metal that prioritizes raw force over subtlety. Released in September 2025 on Prosthetic Records, this debut full-length draws on the pedigrees of members from The Atlas Moth (Stavros Giannopoulos and Alex Klein) and Without Waves (Anthony Cwan and Gary Naples). The result is eight tracks of dense, riff-driven aggression.

The album opens with the stomping “Reptile Dysfunction” and rarely lets up. Thick, downtuned guitars deliver powerlifting sludge grooves that shift into hardcore-punk bursts and mosh-ready breakdowns. Tracks like “Abrupt Violence,” “Weaponized Goodwill,” and “Insect Politics” hit with immediate impact, while longer cuts such as “Darling, You Don’t Look Well” and closer “The New Romance” allow room for atmosphere and tension without diluting the intensity. Vocals bark and howl with genuine vitriol, matching lyrics that confront personal trauma, betrayal, societal paranoia, and modern unease. The title question lands as both challenge and diagnosis.

Production is a major strength. Sanford Parker’s mix (with mastering by Brad Boatright) gives every palm-muted chord and bass pulse the weight of industrial machinery, ensuring the band sounds massive and cohesive. There’s little aimless wandering here—just focused, methodical songwriting that keeps the momentum high and the hooks sharp.

Motherless executes style with veteran confidence and urban grit. Do You Feel Safe? is cathartic, abrasive, and thoroughly satisfying for fans of heavy, riff-forward metal that mirrors the chaos of the current moment. When the band asks the title question, the music leaves little room for an affirmative answer.
