Born Adrift, the sophomore full-length from Denver instrumental post-metal band Only Echoes, arrives August 14, 2026 via Braeburn Records as a focused, storm-tossed journey through isolation, endurance, and hard-won momentum.
True to the band’s “No gods, no vocals” ethos, the quartet—guitarists Austin Minney and Dustin Yourishin, bassist Ben Rosenberg, and drummer Zach Sirotkin—lets towering riffs, layered atmospheres, and dynamic shifts carry an internal narrative of survival in hostile waters. The artwork, a recolored Gustave Doré engraving from The Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Celeste Hayes, sets the maritime, existential tone perfectly.
Clocking in at a tight 35 minutes across six tracks, the album expands the cinematic heaviness of 2022’s Sunsickness. The title track opens with waves of intense, rhythmic heaviness, catchy lead hooks, and shifting light-and-shade passages that feel like fighting the current without surrender. “Tempest” stretches into more expansive territory, while “So Tightly Bound” builds from anxious tension through a climactic surge into a triumphant close, like a high-stakes escape that never fully loses hope. The brief “Inter” offers a moment of breathing room before “Steps Ahead of Drowning” moves from fragile restraint into crushing, tidal distortion—the album’s clearest embodiment of drifting and transformation. “Shimmering Death” closes with a sense of hard-earned resolution.
Minney’s production (engineered and mixed at All Aces Studio, mastered by Brad Smalling) delivers massive low end and ethereal cleans that feel both meditative and catastrophic, drawing clear lines to Russian Circles, Pelican, and Isis while keeping a distinct melodic accessibility. The dual guitars flicker between glimmering chords and chunky chugs; the rhythm section drives the emotional weight without excess. Some transitions can feel abrupt, but the overall arc rewards immersion.
Born Adrift is a strong, emotionally charged statement in modern American instrumental post-metal—devastatingly heavy yet deeply melodic, and proof that words are unnecessary when the music itself charts the struggle and the will to keep moving. Fans of the genre should dive in.
