Belgian noise-rockers 30,000 Monkies have spent more than a decade making sludge feel like a party no one invited you to and everyone is glad you crashed. Super Rebound, due September 18 on their own FVN KVLT REKORDS, is billed as leaner, meaner, catchier, and heavier than the sprawling experiments of I Ate Myself to Grow Twice as Big or the four-movement sermon of Honesty Integrity Friendship Passion. The two singles already out suggest they mean it.
The title track is a six-and-a-half-minute riff freight train. It does not develop so much as it occupies: the same grinning, steamrolling figure returns until the tables are not merely turned but poured in concrete. The band calls it a celebration of hitting back with a huge smiling fist. That is exactly how it feels—good-natured fury with the volume cranked until cosmic balance is restored by repetition alone.
“Prism Break,” by contrast, is the two-minute-fifty-two-second summer sludge-pop anthem they promised: windows down, stereo up, hammock optional. It is catchier than anything in their catalog without sacrificing the thick, speaker-wrecking tone that has always been their calling card. Where earlier records wandered into thirteen-minute noise odysseys, these songs punch and stick.
If the rest of the album follows this template—hook plus hammer, champagne fizz inside the sludge—Super Rebound will be the Monkies’ most immediate record. The weirdness is still there; it just no longer needs thirteen minutes to announce itself. Evil, they insist, does not stand a chance against this kind of fury. On the evidence so far, they are not wrong.
