Atropa by E-L-R is a potent, poison-laced meditation on irreversible change, grief, and endurance.
The Swiss duo (I.R. on bass/vocals and S.M. on guitar/vocals, with former drummer M.K. contributing before health issues forced his exit) have long specialized in hypnotic doomgaze and post-metal—reverb-drenched, ritualistic soundscapes that blend weight with dissolution. Their third album, due November 6, 2026 via Prophecy Productions, sharpens that approach into something darker and harsher. Shaped by a period of profound transformation and illness, Atropa takes its name from the genus of deadly nightshade (belladonna): beautiful, intoxicating, and poisonous.
Lyrically it moves through stages of grief, delirium, obsessive love, and resilience, lingering in liminal spaces where yearning and loss blur. The six-track structure—Oaken Reaper, Archeress, Cobalt Wound, Solace Tracery, Saltwinds, Echo Space—promises a focused emotional arc rather than sprawling epics. The lead single “Archeress” sets the tone: a song about predestination and quiet violence, in which “what once sprang from her own hand returns to her.” The band describes it as the moment fate is sealed and escape becomes impossible—an arrow already loosed.
Expect the familiar E-L-R hallmarks refined: looping, shamanic riffs, dual vocals floating in haze, and slow-building intensity that recalls Amenra’s catharsis or Alcest’s woodland melancholy, but with added edge and poison.
