Prosthetic Memories by Coyote Man is a long-gestating triumph for the Chicago instrumental progressive metal/post-rock trio, a seamless, cinematic journey that rewards patience after five years of careful evolution.
Formed in 2015 by guitarist Augie Portugal and drummer Ian Wheeler (with bassist Rene Rodriguez later solidifying the lineup), Coyote Man has built a reputation for dense, emotionally charged soundscapes that blend crushing riffs with atmospheric expanses, drawing from post-rock, progressive metal, and psychedelic influences. Their earlier work, including the self-titled 2017 debut and 2020’s Precognition, showcased visceral guitar work, tribal rhythms, and intricate dynamics. Prosthetic Memories (streaming August 14, 2026, with vinyl via Smashed Plastic) elevates that foundation into something more unified and ambitious.
Producer Dan Klein helped sequence the album into a continuous, Pink Floyd-style experience that feels like one extended composition rather than discrete songs. Heavy, riff-driven passages collide with swirling psychedelic textures and quieter, reflective interludes. Tracks such as the already-previewed “War Hatchet” deliver taut, aggressive energy, while pieces like “Interpreting Dreams” and “Holographic Heirloom” lean into dreamier, exploratory territory. Older unused ideas from two decades prior are woven in, giving the record a sense of lived-in history and organic growth.
The album remains largely instrumental until its closing track, “Faith in a Burning Room,” which features guest vocals from Chris Pacific. This departure from the band’s usual approach provides a powerful, humanizing climax without disrupting the overall flow—proof that the group knows exactly when to break their own rules. Prosthetic Memories succeeds as both a culmination of Coyote Man’s strengths and a confident step forward. It is heavy yet spacious, aggressive yet contemplative, and meticulously crafted for immersive listening. Fans of instrumental prog and post-metal will find plenty to sink into, while the vinyl release and upcoming live shows (including the August 21 album release at Liar’s Club) only heighten the anticipation. This is the sound of a band fully realizing its vision.
