Rick Massie has released a new track titled “Need,” taken from his upcoming release Guided to an Imperfect Light. which drops June 3. 2022. Listen below.
“Need” is a nearly-10-minute journey through darkness and hope, with many riffs and melodies that straddle the line between prog metal, prog rock, doom and black metal. Flowing more like a novel than a traditional song, “Need” takes listeners down a wide variety of dark musical paths before it reaches a hopeful and inspired resolution at the end. Choirs, orchestration and vocal harmonies combine with intense drumming and crunchy guitars to create the backdrop for vocals that flow from serene to anguished.

Rick Massie is a progressive metal artist from Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada. However, the music is unlike what many would expect from progressive metal. Rather than relying on technical wizardry or soaring, high pitched vocals, Rick relies on unusual song structures, mixed genres (often many within a single song) and unique melodies (and dissonances) to create “journeys”, as opposed to “songs”. His music focuses on themes of hope and love amidst times of darkness and loss.
