This time around we feature the collection of musician Scott Driscoll, drummer in the West Coast metal band Archons.
The first record I ever bought with my own money was…
Billy Idol – Rebel Yell. I rode the city bus to the Old Capitol mall in Iowa City and bought it with my own money when the record was still in stores as a new release. 1983 I think?
The record that made me want to make music was…
There are 3 that I can think of specifically – Motley Crüe Too Fast for Love, Van Halen 1984 and Frank Zappa Joe’s Garage. The drums are super loud and very prominent on all of these records, and when I first heard these was about the time I was really getting into drumming.
There was a kid in my neighborhood that was about 4 years older than me that introduced me to these records, he had all of the cool music. The only rock music I had previously heard was exclusively what the radio stations were playing.
The record I’ve played more than any other is…
The first six Black Sabbath records.
The record that always make me feel good is…
Voivod Nothingface. I can’t help but smile at every twist and turn, every freaky dissonant Piggy chord. This was the ultimate key for me in unlocking Voivod, along with Dimension Hatröss.
The record I turn to when I’m feeling down is…
Dust’s self-titled is one that comes to mind. This is deluxe upbeat guitar rock boogie-woogie music at its finest. For example, Side A Song One – “Stone Woman.” It’s difficult not to crack a smile or air drum to this one for me.
The record with my favorite cover art is…
Anything Skinner does is pretty mind blowing (Mastodon Once More ‘Round the Sun), or anything done by Arik Roper, John Santos and John Dyer Baizley.
The strangest LP I own is…
I’ve got a record called Auscultation of the Heart. It was “provided as a service to medical students….” and it is exactly as the title suggests, listening to the heart. A series of normal and abnormal heartbeats.
Non music LP’s are freaky to sit down and listen to, of these my favorite would have to be ‘The BIG Sounds of the Drags’ which is “a descriptive on-the-spot recording of thrill-packed moments from the quarter-mile tracks.”
The rarest LP I own is…
Not an LP, but a set of 7″ records. In 1996 the Melvins put out one 7″ per month on Amphetamine Reptile – also called “Melvins Monthly Series”. Each month only 800 copies were pressed of each issue and distributed worldwide, and I ended up with the complete full set of 12.
The last LP I bought was…
Old Iron Lupus Metallorum. We were about to do our Fall West Coast Tour with them, and this had just come out on a Good to Die Records. I wanted to be sure I got one of the limited edition colored vinyl, and I also wanted to be familiar with their new material. Exceptional record, killer dudes and superbly solid and consistent at every show we played with them. Rock on, Old Iron.
