This time around we feature the collection of Julio Rey, guitarist/vocals of the Christian punk/post-hardcore band The Lead.
The first record I ever bought with my own money was…
Ram by Paul McCartney when it came out in 1971. I got it with my allowance money.
The record that made me want to make music was…
Meet the Beatles. I first heard it when I was four. It had just come out and I was instantly inspired by it — and also by my mother buying me a plastic Beatles guitar — to put on shows lip-synching to that Beatles record for visiting family members. So I guess that’s when the bug got me right back there and then.
The record I’ve played more than any other is…
The White Album by the Beatles because it’s one that I don’t get tired of, for all the years that I’ve had it. And I first got it when I was 14. It’s a pretty amazing little record there.
The record that always make me feel good is…
Screams from the gutter by Raw Power. It’s a nice poppy little pop record that always makes me bop. And it’s got great screaming and guitar solos, too.
The record I turn to when I’m feeling down is…
Well, there are several but the one I can think of right now is Automatic for the People by REM. It’s got some good songs that kind of cry in sympathy with one, sort of.
The record with my favorite cover art is…
The one I can think of right now is Back To Samoa by the Angry Samoans. They grabbed a still from a 1950s B horror movie called the Monster from Piedras Blancas and kind of superimpose these gnarly colors and graphics and such to make a really crazy punk rock cover there.
The strangest LP I own is…
The strangest LP I own is Chilling Thrilling Sounds of the Haunted House which is a basically an LP’s worth of sound effects made by Disney in the 1960s. And my research has shown me that I got the first edition one with the white cover, for what it’s worth.
The rarest LP I own is…
The Green Hornet, inspired by the TV show from the 60s. It’s got these instrumentals that I have no idea who plays them but they’re kind of cool that are sort of like Johnny and the Hurricanes. Traditional songs but played in a 1960s go-go, rocking-and-rolling beat, and it ended up being something pretty catchy to me at age 7.
The last LP I bought was…
I’m going to limit it to vinyl. It was by Raw Power and it was called Mine to Kill and yes, I bought it on vinyl because I couldn’t find it in another format. I really wanted it especially because it had the guitar playing of Davide Devoti who is like my favorite guitar player that very few people of heard of.
