This time around we feature the collection of Jon Wingrove, drummer in the progressive Brighton, UK based doom metal quintet King Goat.
The first record I ever bought with my own money was…
Faith No More – King For A Day, Fool for a Lifetime. I must’ve listened to this hundreds of times. Great album! I doubt I can say anything about it that hasn’t been said already.
The record that made me want to make music was…
That’s a tough one. I don’t think there’s one single record. I’ve always been making music- but it comes from everything, I guess. Every record in this list, and more.
The record I’ve played more than any other is…
Secret Chiefs 3 – Perichoresis. Since its release, this has probably been played more frequently than anything else I own. It’s the second full-length from a SC3 satellite band, and I’d say Ishraqiyun is probably the satellite band that I find the most engaging. The arrangements are fascinating, the textures are unique.
The title track, “Perichoresis” (based around geometrical relationships and tessellating patterns) is confusing, dizzying and it’s just overwhelmingly impressive that it even exists. It kinda dances and spins all around you, different bits grabbing your attention at any one point.
The notes about each track (on their website) make for some interesting reading, too. Every listen I hear something I didn’t hear the previous time.
The record that always make me feel good is…
Fishbone – Truth and Soul. Maybe some of the subject matter isn’t that uplifting, but the way it’s presented and the energy behind it make this album a feel-good listen time and time again. There’s a whole vibrant range of sounds- some of which you don’t really hear any more, and there’s an obvious passion behind it.
Every track on this album is unique, but I think my favourite track is probably “Subliminal Fascism” which is this noisy punk song with huge organ-sounding keyboards all over the top. I actually met Norwood Fisher very briefly – was great to meet him.
The record I turn to when I’m feeling down is…
I’ve got this odd bootleg LP of a live Alice In Chains set from the 90s. It’s not an official release, so I can’t find much information about it – but the performance is great, and for an old bootleg the sound is surprisingly good. That’s often dug out for those downer times, y’know…
The record with my favorite cover art is…
Mutoid Man – Helium Head. Great album…or is it an EP? It’s short, for sure. All riffs ‘n hooks. The artwork has a lot going on- there’s weird shit and eyeballs staring at you from everywhere.
The strangest LP I own is…
Lapis Lazuli – Wrong Meeting. They’re this weirdo prog outfit from Canterbury (UK). It’s like prog-rock, funk, jazz, a bit of the Grange Hill theme… MIDI guitars playing flute sounds, saxophones- and it all builds to this intense, strangely heavy conclusion. Very talented, very creative. It’s a double LP- one track per side, so 4 really long tracks, basically.
I’d never heard of them, but they were supporting another band I’d gone to see. I don’t actually remember who the other band was. They were so impressive that I bought their record the moment they came off stage- glad I did because the performance on the record matches my memory of how great they were live.
The rarest LP I own is…
Crazy Gods of Endless Noise – Inflatable Geek. OK, so it’s a 10 inch, not a full LP… but I can’t imagine there’s many copies of this still out there, and it was a little harder to get hold of than most records. They were like a garage-rock/hip-hop/pop band… I guess they were a little too late for that to still be popular, and they were definitely a lot weirder than the majority of their peers – although their song-writing still holds together despite the weirdness. As far as I know, they kinda just disappeared.
The last LP I bought was…
I’m gonna name two. Primus – The Desaturating Seven, and Converge – The Dusk In Us. The latter hasn’t arrived yet, but I’m sure it’ll show up in the next week or so – I know it’ll be getting a lot of listening later this month.
The Desaturating Seven is pretty short – but it’s very cool. It’s Primus doing a concept album, which is a great fit.
