This time around we feature the collection of musician Deaf Hank, bassist and lead vocalist of the Finnish band Dö.
The first record I ever bought with my own money was…
Probably Biohazard’s State of the World Address. I was really into them in the 90’s. And the early albums still kick ass. That was actually a CD. Can’t remember what the first vinyl was. My very first own “grown up music” album was KISS’ Animalize tape I got from my parents when I was something like seven or eight I think.
I had a vinyl player as a kid, but decades passed since I got one again. Think it was just couple of years ago. So I’ve gotten back into vinyls only quite recently, and at the moment I still have more CD’s than vinyls.
The record that made me want to make music was…
Alive II or Double Platinum. It was KISS that made me fall in love with music altogether. And those two albums were the ones that most likely made me to want to start playing an instrument, because I played along to them with a carpet beater as Gene’s axe bass. It seems that I already knew I was going to be a bass player.
When I really started to get into playing a guitar and bass, we played covers from bands like Guns N’Roses and Metallica, so maybe Appetite for Destruction from GNR and all Metallica albums from Kill ‘Em All to the Black album can also be counted in.
The record I’ve played more than any other is…
Something from my teen age years, when I was much more passionate and dedicated to a smaller group of bands. These days I listen to so many kind of music, and constantly try to find something new, that I simply don’t stick to individual albums that long. Of course when I find a new band that blows me away, I tend to concentrate on listening to them for a while. Or when something extraordinary pops into my radar. For example Oranssi Pazuzu’s Värähtelijä was on heavy rotation for a good period of time.
The record that always make me feel good is…
Can’t say there’s one particular album that does that, but there is one band always give me good vibes. And that band is The Hellacopters. During their active years their style developed from aggressive action rock to more sophisticated and soulful tunes, so there’s a great variety of energy levels to choose from. I have all their albums and more on CD’s though, but I’m planning on getting them on vinyl soon.
All and all, these days I mostly listen all the heavy stuff on my way to work, or at work from my headphones. At home I mostly listen to music together with my family, and then we listen to all sorts of old stuff like Nat King Cole, Sinatra and Thin Lizzy. That makes me feel really good.
The record I turn to when I’m feeling down is…
Something from High on Fire. Their music has this amazing ability to empower me. There are other albums and bands too, but HoF has been my go to band in situations like this for a while now.
The record with my favorite cover art is…
Although there are tons of cool covers just in doom/stoner genre alone, my all time favorite is still By the Grace of God by none else but The Hellacopters. You know the one with the iconic thunder cloud on it. I love the graphic simplicity and how it describes the striking content of the album. I also have it tattooed on my elbow.
The strangest LP I own is…
My most experiential purchase so far is probably Jean Michel Jarre’s album, but I think that’s not strange enough. My wife actually buys weirder albums than me.
The rarest LP I own is…
I don’t know, and honestly I don’t even care. For me the music matters the most, so I’m not that enthusiastic collector. Although we have a bunch of vintage jazz vinyls my wife’s dad left us, when he moved abroad. Maybe we’ll find some cool rarities from those.
The last LP I bought was…
The Wandering Midget / Hands of Orlac split I bought directly from my brother-in-law, who plays drums in Wandering Midget. Would have probably bought it anyway, ‘cos both bands are awesome.
