This time around we get up close and personal with Matt Dawkins, guitarist in the Melbourne, Australia based grunge/doom band Lamassu.
The first record I ever bought with my own money was…
Dynasty by Kiss, I must have been like 10yrs old, I was so scared of Gene Simmons and I think I wanted to be Ace Frehley! (At the time).
The record that made me want to make music was…
Led Zeppelin I – The riff in ‘Good Times Bad Times’ just blew my mind and Bonzo’s drumming…well no words required, but I think it was ‘Dazed and Confused’ that really caught me hook, line & sinker!
The record I’ve played more than any other is…
Badmotorfinger by Soundgarden, the songs and riffs on this album were like nothing I’d heard before, I loved the odd time signatures, crazy tunings and use of noise and unconventional rhythms and Chris Cornell’s voice was godlike. Matt Cameron’s drumming is phenomenal period!
The record that always make me feel good is…
Punk Rock Guilt by Brant Bjork, just the coolest vibe of any record, it’s like a more stoned-out, streetwise version of ‘Riders On The Storm’ by The Doors, great for a road trip!
The record I turn to when I’m feeling down is…
City Of Echoes by Pelican – so much emotion conveyed by this instrumental band from delicate to crushing, it has it all, no words required.
The record with my favorite cover art is…
The Action is Go by Fu Manchu – just captures the vibe of that record so well and reminds me of my teenage years street skating with my buddies, terrorising grannies on the footpath!
The strangest LP I own is…
Birds Of Fire by Mahavishnu Orchestra – strange in a good way, I call it ‘uneasy listening’. 70’s Jazz Rock Fusion at its blistering best, John McLaughlin is one of my favourite guitarists and writes the most ‘out there’ music you’ve most likely ever heard.
The rarest LP I own is…
The Doors debut LP original mono version , I mean it’s in ‘mono’ it must be rare! ‘The End’.
The last LP I bought was…
Coven’s Will by Witchskull, one of my favourite Australian bands, Marcus is a wizard on the guitar and must be seen live to be fully appreciated. The whole band has a certain vibe that you just know has some special magic going on between them that is infectious, their first LP The Vast Electric Dark is a classic too!
Lamassu’s latest album, Into the Empty, was released on September 2, 2019. Order from Lamassu on limited edition 180 gram black vinyl with exclusive full color 12″ insert and digital download card. CD and digital download also available.
