In part two of this offering, we finish up getting close and personal with Brian Bauhs, lead guitarist in the New York based instrumental doom band Clouds Taste Satanic.
The record I turn to when I’m feeling down is…
It seems counter intuitive to play melancholy music when I’m feeling down but on the rare occasions that happens, The Cure’s “Seventeen Seconds” meets the mood. It got me through the awkward, angst filled years. Robert smith is so good at creating a mood.
When I’m angry nothing hits the spot like Slipknot’s “Iowa” but we can’t talk about that here because I don’t own it on vinyl. Released in 2001 at the low point of vinyl, when CD was king there are very few vinyl copies in circulation. It’s so strange they haven’t rereleased it. I suspect the master tapes burned in 2008’s Universal Studios vault fire.
The record with my favorite cover art is…
Rick Neilson was collecting guitars from the earliest days before people began referring to any electric guitars as “vintage”. The booklet that came in Cheap Trick‘s “At Budokan” was FILLED with pics of Gibson sunburst Les Pauls, early Strats, Explorer’s, Flying V’s, and of course, the custom guitars Hamer made for him. I spent HOURS staring at those guitars, wanting them, coveting them. As an album it created mythology. It gave the impression that Cheap Trick was a MASSIVE band when in fact, in the US they were barely filling small theaters. But it MADE them huge stars. My love for Cheap Trick was one of the reasons Clouds covered “Auf Wiedersehen” on our new album “Cloud Covered”. It’s such a devastatingly heavy song.
The strangest LP I own is…
I love it, but I think some people find Killdozer’s “For Ladies Only” a strange strange album.
Killdozer are hometown hero’s to me. They don’t get enough credit or recognition but they were playing sludge and doom before anyone thought to call it that. Heavy, slow, crushing. Incredible stuff and lyrics that are a Wisconsin death trip.
“For Ladies Only” was their 1989 cover song collection. 22 years later Clouds Taste Satanic has its own crushing, heavy covers collection, “Cloud Covered”. They chose Bad Company, Conway Twitty, and the Steve Miller Band. We chose Bachman Turner Overdrive, Chicago, and The Flaming Lips. Maybe we’ll cover Killdozer in the future.
The rarest LP I own is…
I’ve never sought out records based on rarity. I just buy what I like. My collection is full of early Sub-Pop releases before Soundgarden, Nirvana, and Mudhoney blew up. I’m loyal to record labels. When I find a label I love, I’ll take a chance on anything they release.
So when someone came to town who was on Amphetamine Reptile records YOU WENT TO THAT SHOW! You knew it was going to be good. Same was true with Touch and Go and SST. They were dependable.
There are a bunch of really incredible labels now too. Anything on Heavy Psych Sounds, Ripple, Blues Funeral, Magnetic Eye, Cursed Tongue, Riding Easy, Relapse, Southern Lord… So many great heavy labels. You know it’s going to be great.
The last LP I bought was…
There have been so many great releases in the last few months. So many records that I keep coming back to again and again. Kryptograf’s debut record is great. I absolutely loved Acid Mammoth’s “Under Acid Hoof” and their new one, “Caravan” is working for me too. And I love Forming The Void’s “Reverie”. The guitar work is so good. Shadi knows how to build a guitar solo. Check out his solo on their track “Onward Through the Haze”. So great.
It’s really awesome to be part of a community of such great heavy music. Every couple weeks there is something new that blows me away. It’s inspiring and pushes me to seek out new tones, new sounds, and make our upcoming album our best ever.
