The first record I ever bought with my own money was…
Tool – Opiate & Undertow. When Tool released Aenima early on vinyl, they also released Opiate and Undertow. Both of these records were gamechangers musically for me in high school. I owned both of them on cassette, so I was stoked to have them on vinyl. These two records were the start of my adult record collection.
The record that made me want to make music was…
I don’t own any of the physical LP’s that made me want to start making music, but one record of note that I own would be Bloodlet – The Seraphim Fall. They were the first metal-core band that I heard, and made me want to create darker music, that was also heavy.
The record I’ve played more than any other is…
Neurosis – Enemy of the Sun. The song “Lost” is probably one of my favorite songs of all time, and is the epitome of heavy, epic and cathartic music, in my opinion.
The record that always make me feel good is…
When I am feeling good, I like to hear riffs, so Sleep’s Dopesmoker is perfect for that.
The record I turn to when I’m feeling down is…
A Silver Mt. Zion – He Has Left Us Alone but Shafts of Light Sometimes Grace the Corner of Our Rooms. The song “Movie (Never Made)” is one of those rare moments with vocals from this band. It’s sad but also a call to action.
The record with my favorite cover art is…
This was a hard one for me because I own a lot of records with awesome covers. As an artist I wish people would talk more about the album art in reviews. Sunn O))) – Black One is probably my favorite as far as art and packaging goes. Also, it’s one of the most played records in my collection. Stephen O’ Malley definitely has a huge influence on my playing and the way that I approach album art. A strong runner up would be the new Sumac record Love in Shadow, Aaron Turner being another guitarist / artist that has influence my art and music.
The strangest LP I own is…
I probably own stranger records but the one that sticks out to me is Noisegate – The Towers are Burning. Noise as a genre is strange to me, even as a fan. I bought the CD version of this record at a Neurosis show in 1999, and it’s been a stand out for me ever since. I bought it on vinyl about 10 years ago, and almost purchased a second copy on tour once, but decided to buy Coil – Time Machines instead, which is definitely strange as well.
The rarest LP I own is…
I probably have rarer underground hardcore 7”s, but the most notable in my collections is Swans – New Mind 7” single.
The last LP I bought was…
I picked up Oakeater – Molech at a record store in Berlin. Another rare record, that I have been on the hunt for, and finally found. Oakeater is a noise band from Chicago.
