In this offering, we are very pleased to get up close and personal with Adam Joad from the band Scattered Hamlet.
The first record I ever bought with my own money was…
I’m not sure, when I started collecting music it was all about CDs. We had vinyl records at my house growing up but I didn’t start buying my own until the vinyl resurgence. I started building my own collection in probably 2005. The first new one I bought that wasn’t given to me was either Slayer’s “South of Heaven,” Danzig’s first one or Springsteen’s “Darkness on the Edge of Town.”
The record that made me want to make music was…
That’s easy, Kiss Alive 2! I used to bust that out on my Mickey Mouse turntable. My brother let me pick any record from his collection and I immediately gravitated toward that one.
The record I’ve played more than any other is…
Probably David Bowie’s Space Oddity side 1 (72’). It’s a masterpiece. It’s so much better on vinyl than listening to it on Spotify or CD. I have the cover with just his face, I’ve seen other cover versions. Cygnet Committee is a very powerful social commentary on this with vocals representing both sides of political turmoil. We can take lessons from that in 2021 – in all the one sided communication with the lunatic fringe on both sides dominating the conversation we forgot that there’s many perspectives and everyone arguing is convinced they are right…
The record that always make me feel good is…
Probably Fugazi’s “7 songs,” I think that came out in 88’. I have a reissue version from Dischord. It’s the one Fugazi record Guy Picciotto didn’t contribute guitar on, there’s an interesting fact for you. Only Ian played guitar on this one. Another one that always makes me feel good is Starship’s “Knee Deep in the Hoopla” (85’). How can you not smile when “We Built This City” comes on. It’s a ridiculous but awesome song and Grace Slick is such a unique vocalist. It’s good stuff, I don’t care if that’s an unpopular opinion.
The record I turn to when I’m feeling down is…
Springsteen’s Nebraska (82’) is a very melancholy album – just the boss and a 4 track recorder. Very haunting. When you’re down it captures that classic Americana struggle from many different perspectives. It let’s you know you’re not alone, everyone in all walks of life is fighting their own internal war in some way. It’s dangerous if you forget that. It’s an important unifier for humanity.
The record with my favorite cover art is…
In my collection Charlie Daniel’s “Full Moon” from 1980. It has an illustration of the full band in a swamp. It’s perfect for the album. I really like cover art and illustrations like that. I’m also a fan of the album cover for Billy Joel’s “Glass Houses” also from 1980. It’s a matte finish cover with a pic of Billy Joel in winter in a leather jacket getting ready to throw a rock at a glass house. It’s a great image.
The strangest LP I own is…
I have this Rod stewart “Sing it Again Rod” vinyl that has a cover shaped and in the image of a cocktail glass with Rod’s image behind it. It’s a freaking cocktail class, that’s amazing. I think it’s from 73’ – it’s a great album too.
The rarest LP I own is…
I’m not sure how rare they are but I have picture vinyl of Prince’s Purple Rain, Slayer and Danzig. I also have some bootleg Iron Maiden and Motley Crue live that are probably pretty rare. I have 2 test pressings of Scattered Hamlet’s “Stereo Overthrow.” That’s our band obviously but only 4 of those exist. Fans own the other 2.
The last LP I bought was…
I bought Void Vator’s new album from Ripple Music. Erik from Void Vator has filled in for Scattered Hamlet many times and I wanted to support good music. Erik also sent me an original Cinderella “Long Cold Winter” vinyl for my Birthday back in September.
Scattered Hamlet’s latest album, Stereo Overthrow, was released in 2021. Available on vinyl and CD from the band’s website here.
