This time around we feature the collection of Illustrator/Head Cheese at Odd Comics, Brock Brown.

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

Soundgarden – Jesus Christ Pose 12″. I was living in Portland at the time and I found this record in this late night arcade. As soon as I saw it I thought “Holy Smokes! I have got to make it mine! I literally had exactly what it cost at the time which was like $7 or something. That record would be the beginning of my vinyl collecting as I am a child of the 80s and only knew cassettes and then cds. As I grew older I began to appreciate vinyl and started collecting immediately; its been a love affair ever since.

The record that made me want to make music was…

Nirvana – Bleach. When I got this record I lost my mind; Heavy as hell and a great recording all over. This record turned my head hard towards trying to put a band together.

The record I’ve played more than any other is…

Sparklehorse – A Thousand Years in the Belly of a Mountain. This record followed me like a phantom. I use to go record hunting with a friend of mine even if we were broke. Well at least four times we went on these excursions and each time this record would pop up in front of me no matter where I chose to go every time we came to the record shop. I would begrudgingly tell the record “Sorry pal I can’t I’m broke!” (trust me going home empty handed sucks). On the fourth and final time I bought it and it turned out to be the best record I bought that year and I played that record more than any record that year.

The record that always make me feel good is…

Queen – News of the World. Hard to say why it does but I would say I think it’s the over all energy of the band. Especially Freddie Mercury. The art on this record has always stuck in my head; it’s one of my favorites. These guys always seemed way ahead of their own time. Truly an amazing band.

The record I turn to when I’m feeling down is…

Brothers of the Sonic Cloth. This record doesn’t make me depressed and it doesn’t make me happy ; it just puts this whole mess into perspective. By the end of it I feel grateful for the atmosphere this band provides. Not to mention the “King of Heavy,” Tad Doyle is fronting this amazing band.

The record with my favorite cover art is…

Jesus Lizard – Liar. If you have never heard of this band, you should check it out at the very least once. Personally I love this band because they are absolutely crazy and the onslaught of noise that comes from this band makes your bones shake. The cover art is amazing because you think of something new each time you look at it.

The strangest LP I own is…

Jimmy Durante and his Guests. This record is not really a typical strange record in the sense of sound. This is just strange for the friends who are probably surprised by me owning this record. I just think this old stuff is great and has a honest sound to it. Plus it still sort of baffles me how much people loved Jimmy Durante even though he didn’t have the smoothest voice in the world. I think its just because I think Jimmy Durante is strange.

The rarest LP I own is…

L7 – Monster 12″. It was a fine winter evening at the record shop in Berkeley when I looked on the wall behind the counter to see this gorgeous record hanging there just talking me into having its children “Ask for me at the register”; totally under a spell I nodded and moved eagerly into the line. The line was a bit long but I was fine to wait. As I stood there happy and excited I started to notice the other people in line ahead of me gandering at the records on the wall. I started to say “no way man” in my head and then I saw a face light up with a smile and point saying “Look at that L7 record!!” At this point I’m standing there like Dave Mustaine “Sweating bullets” and the line begins to move. My mind starts reeling off “Aw man she’s gonna get it!” As the people move closer to the register it comes to the customer who basically had an orgasm over the record and says… absolutely nothing about the record. Yeah that’s right folks. The customer was just commenting. LOL. I almost had me a little stroke. So thus the record came to me, the rightful owner. This record is rare to me.

The last LP I bought was…

Mudhoney – SuperFuzz BigMuff. This is the last record I purchased and it was a “get it done” sort of buy. It has yet to be played but this record is really the greatest when it comes to dirty filthy rock. Also I’m a fucking grunger!
