This time around we feature the vinyl collections of Kynan and Tom from the Taunton, UK based band Sail.

Kynan: The first record I bought with my own money was a second hand copy of Moving Pictures by Rush. I fell in love with prog rock from a young age and started my journey with this album. Looking back, Rush were a great gateway to stranger sounds and out-there attitudes towards music.
The record that made me want to make music was…
Kynan: I had always been interested in music but it was probably Fly by Night by Rush that really kicked my desire to create music into full swing. From the opening track ‘Anthem’ I was hooked! I was lucky enough to see them play on their snakes and arrows tour. It was at that point that I decided music was very much a big part of my life.
The record I’ve played more than any other is…
Kynan: This is an easy one. Yellow and Green by Baroness. Whether I’m feeling happy, sad or anywhere between this is always my go to record(s). It’s full of hooky choruses and big riffs. I think I know this album better than any other start to finish. The artwork is also stunning which helps. John Baizley is the dude.
The record that always make me feel good is…
Kynan: This is a hard one to answer because there are so many records that make me feel good. Dreamboat Annie by Heart is up there. It always reminds me of growing up as my mother was a big Heart fan. There’s always a bit of Heart creeping into band road trip playlists! Also, Magic Man is an absolute banger.
The record I turn to when I’m feeling down is…
Tom: I have a battered copy of Led Zeppelin 4 which I love to bits and is a good listen to beat the blues. This is one of my Mum’s favourite albums and was played a lot when I was a kid. In particular I think the sadder, quieter songs have aged quite well, despite about 20% of the record’s lyrical content being pinched from Lord of the Rings.

Tom: I have a copy of Flight of the Conchords’ “Told You I Was Freaky” which features art by John Baizley from Baroness! I’m sure there’ an amazing story on how that collaboration happened. I had no idea he did the art until a few years back, but I went back and it’s a lot more intricate than I remembered. Also he threw loads of birds in, because of course he did.
The strangest LP I own is…
Tom: our guitarist Tim bought me a copy of the Stranger Things soundtrack a few years back. That is, by default, the strangest LP I own. It’s also great and the show is a band favourite.
The rarest LP I own is…
Tom: I own an ancient copy of Fistful of Metal by Anthrax, which isn’t massively rare but is uncommon (I think?). Finding it in a record store when I was 17 was quite a special moment. The art, production and songwriting have aged poorly but for silly 80s metal it’ll always have a place in my heart.
The last LP I bought was…
Tom: I bought a copy of The Bees Made Honey in the Lion’s Skull; technically this was a gift to someone else, but before parting company I spent a long time gazing longingly at it. The reissue is gorgeous, and now the weather is brightening it feels like a good time to enjoy Earth’s most summery record.
