Ed Gane (Bad Blood Recovery)

This time around we feature the collection of Ed Gane, guitarist in the Oxford based death-blues band Bad Blood Recovery.

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

ZZ Top – Fandango. I grew up with the sounds of Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Dire Straits and ZZ Top playing on my Father’s hi-fi, he built amplifiers and speaker cabinets so I was exposed to quality sound reproduction from a very early age. I still long to crank some early ZZ Top through a pair of valve powered monoblocks, The Rev Billy Gibbons Les Paul never sounded more alive to me than on Blue Jean Blues emanating from the old Leak amp through the Celestion drivers. Magical.

The record that made me want to make music was…

Jimi Hendrix – Axis: Bold As Love. The sheer sonic soundscape Hendrix created was astonishing to me, this wasn’t my first Hendrix album but the breadth of songs on this album from pop to heavy rock all laced with genius psychedelia really made me want to pick up the guitar again. I had lessons on guitar from a very early age and had made some great progress but grew very bored of it. This album reignited that spark. Cheers Jimi!

The record I’ve played more than any other is…

Megadeth – Rust In Peace. Without doubt. Probably the first thrash metal album I paid much notice to, I was more into ZZ Top, Black Sabbath and Motorhead early on – but Jesus. Marty Friedman. The man can play. A masterpiece, not a weak moment on the whole album and I have probably heard it a thousand times, never tire of listening to it.

The record that always make me feel good is…

Wishbone Ash – Argus. A perfect album. It never fails to lift my mood, the twin guitars and the way they intertwine is something special. I don’t think they captured anything close to that since, but to have produced something of such quality is a rare achievement indeed.

The record I turn to when I’m feeling down is…

Black Pyramid – Black Pyramid. Every song is a riff lesson, easily one of my desert island discs. Heavy duty music with soul.

The record with my favorite cover art is…

Jimi Hendrix – Axis:Bold As Love. Have you seen it? I don’t need to explain, just wonderful to look at.

The strangest LP I own is…

A bootleg of a Slayer Concert from 1985, double vinyl. I bought it from a market stall in Kingston, South West London back in the mid nineties. Quality is as you’d expect, bought more for the novelty than anything. There was a whole industry on Carnaby Street around bootleg tapes, you could buy them in all the music shops and this was the first LP I had seen like it.

The rarest LP I own is…

Probably the Slayer Bootleg, doubt there are many of those about…

The last LP I bought was…

Sleep – The Sciences. I even pre-ordered it, had to be done. I mainly buy cassettes now, I still run a cassette deck and a minidisc (!) in my hi-fi setup but there was something special about that Sleep album coming out of nowhere. I loved the fact the hype machine hadn’t had time to inflate it, it pretty much landed unknown and unheard – a rarity these days.

Bad Blood Recovery released a new single called “Silver Shroud” on November 30, 2018. You can listen to and download it here.
