In this offering, we are very pleased to get up close and personal with Conan Neutron, vocalist/guitarist in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin based band Conan Neutron & The Secret Friends.
The first record I ever bought with my own money was…
Man, I would LOVE to say something really cool here, but it would be all lies. I got some Disco compilation at the thrift store where I lived. It had a “Fifth of Beethoven” by Walter Murphy which I thought was QUITE the jam at the advanced age of 9 years old, I believe it cost $0.75. I was lucky enough to grow up in a household filled with Beatles, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Neil Young, CCR, AC/DC, Van Halen, and Billy Idol records, so there wasn’t an immediate need for me to go out on my own until I found punk rock.
The record that made me want to make music was…
Unwound – Repetition. I was kind of mucking around for a few years before that, but that’s where it got real for me and everything came into focus.
The record I’ve played more than any other is…
Ramones S/T. I practically wore that one out. Play one side, flip it over and play the other, flip it over again.
The record that always make me feel good is…
Stooges – Fun House. Quite simply one of my favorite rock records of all time. You gotta love any record that can make “I feel alright!” sound like a threat!
The record I turn to when I’m feeling down is…
Kid Dakota – So Pretty. It’s a very weird and moody record, but there’s something about how it all fits together that really fits that kind of mood. There was a reissue on vinyl a few years back through Graveface and it is really lovely.
The record with my favorite cover art is…
Gang of Four – Entertainment!. There’s something about the layout of it, and that the different panels tell a story that just blew my mind. It seemed so sinister and subversive. As much as I loved London Calling and Minor Threat and Sgt Peppers and all of the classics, there’s something about how that record was presented that was very alluring to me.
The strangest LP I own is…
Reptoid – Worship False Gods. Not just a beautiful and iconic strange rock masterpiece, but the vinyl itself is floating green slime blob in clear vinyl. AWESOME…. And STRAAAANGE.
The rarest LP I own is…
I have an original pressing of Sparks – No. 1 in Heaven. That’s the Giorgio Moroder produced one. I found it at the Ashby flea market in Berkeley, CA and couldn’t explain to my friend why it was such a big deal that it was only $8.
The last LP I bought was…
Nonagon – They Birds. Great, great band. Their first non-EP offering.
